CUSTOM TOUCHES – PART 3

Shayne explains that over the last 2 months since he last explained his progressions, the progress has been slow due to the lack of paint availability & weather restrictions in his area. But luckily Shayne has finished the Langley beaver & made a decent start on the spare boot & boot spoiler.

Shayne explains that to do your own panel work and painting, and more importantly to do it on a budget, he recommends that you firstly buy a large spray can of whatever colour Supercheap, Autopro or Repco etc has, as it is easier to use a large can in a similar color to what you have got as sometimes the exact color of your car is available only in smaller cans. This can make it hard to spray a big panel with a couple of coats. Therefore using the cheaper paint as a base coat, you can later do all of your finishing coats with the proper colour of your car.

Shayne began work on the primed beaver panel and turned it over so that the bolt side is facing up. He then gave it 2 quick coats of white (proper color) between coats. Using a little heat from an electric heat gun, you can cure the paint sooner then just letting it dry outside. This also helps with less dust settling on the panel and therefore making a smoother finish. But do not hold the gun over the surface for too long or too close as you might burn the paint. You will know when it has gone off enough for a second coat as the surface will be slightly matt looking.

Once the final coat was on the panel and sealed off, Shayne flipped the panel over and started laying the first coat of the non-standard white on the side that will be visible. Shayne explains that if your spraying is not too perfect, then it is fine as you will be rubbing these out in the final sanding anyway. You then let the panel dry somewhere out of the weather so that the paint can cure properly.

After the paint dries, it is back to the sanding! Shayne recommends using a spray bottle of water give the paint a quick spray then wet sand. Shayne recommends too start off at 600gritt until you have an even looking layer of paint. Shayne then sprayed another 3 layers in the standard white but states that it really depends on how long it takes you to match the original color. From here it is a simple means of repeating the 600gritt process. When you are happy with the surface, switch to 2000gritt & with small circular motion get a fine polished look into the paint.
